Leandro Cano was born in Jaen, a little town in Andalucía, Spain. When he was 16, he moved to Granada to study Graphic Design and Photography, which enabled him to further develop his early creativity and artistic curiosity. Fashion was his passion since he was a child, so when he finished his degree, he moved to Seville to study Fashion Design. While studying, he was selected to participate in several contests, as Pasarela Abierta in Mucia or MOVE in Seville. It was an amazing experience for him, achieving great media impact and excellent reviews from the fashion press. This encouraged him to keep on the hard work and to increase his trust in himself.
Soon after finishing his degree in Seville, the Leandro Cano brand was established in 2012. He showed his first collection in the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid. The name of this collection was “Buffet”, and was widely accepted by both the press and general public. The brand started to achieve a great deal of success in the fashion world and his designs were demanded by the general public.
Features of the brand such as the original volumes, careful and precise work of knitwear and leather, and innovative and original techniques, were already recognizable. Leandro Cano had already achieved the most important thing for a designer: his own personality. Innovation and tradition created a balanced mixture between the most innovative techniques, the old Spanish tradition of handmade knitwear, as well as an original and renewed vision of the Spanish culture and iconography. Additionally, that year Leandro was one of the 5 finalists of the “Designer for Tomorrow” contest, sponsored by Marc Jacobs and where more than 360 contestants participated. Leandro won the contest and so his “Buffet” collection was shown at the final of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. The prize consisted on presenting a new collection supported by Marc Jacobs and his team in January 2012, as well as travelling to New York and Paris to do workshop in Marc Jacobs’ atelier, where he had the opportunity to work and learn under his guidance. Finally, after more than 6 months of work and investigation, "Anima", as the collection was named, was shown at the 2013 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. Some of the features of this collection included the precise work of leather, fanciful volumes and ceramic overlays as an original element. This contest marked the beginning of his international career. After this, Leandro Cano became popular in Germany, where he participates very often in interviews, catwalks, editorials and collaborations. In fact, one of his limited bag editions was commercialized by Peek and Cloppenburg, an important department store in Germany. Most of his designs are showcased at Museum Angewandte Knust in Frankfurt along with Margiela’s and McQueen’s designs.
In 2013 “Leandro Cano Weekend Bag”, was launched, a symbiosis between backpack and bag made in cowhide leather and inspired by Andalucía. It is still for sale in the New Talent Shop e-Bay. Additionally he became that year finalist of the 5th edition of Mango Fashion Awards.
Currently Leandro is working as a teacher in several fashion schools. He is also developing two important projects. Recently, he has won the first edition of the Samsung Innovation Project, a contest that consists on supporting the production of a collection mixing fashion and technology. It was launched at Samsung EGO at the last Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid edition. The second project is the most exciting challenge that he has ever faced: the launching of his first ready-to-wear collection. The increasing demand of the public has led him to embark on this fascinating project. It is an important project for the brand, so he is devoting time and efforts to meet his goals and to be able to launch the new brand, which will be named “Luque by Leandro Cano” and will be commercialized around Europe.
Recently Leandro has been awarded with “Dedal de Oro” 2014 award. He also became finalist in the Official Fashion National Awards of Spain granted by the Ministry of Industry in best upcoming designer category. |
